What Is Botox?

Botox is a common injectable treatment made from a purified form of the botulinum toxin type A. Unlike dermal fillers, Botox and Dysport® are neuromodulators, meaning they block signals from the nerves to the muscles. When precisely injected into targeted and pre-planned locations, Botox stops muscle contractions and movements that cause fine lines and dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles made by frequent, repetitive muscle movements.

When Botox is injected into precise locations, it can treat:

  • Forehead or “worry” lines
  • Frown lines, or the “11s,” between the eyebrows
  • Smile lines
  • Bunny lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Lip flip to improve the fullness and definition of the upper lip

Botox FAQs

Recovery after Botox or Dysport is minimal. Most patients can return to work and normal activities immediately after treatment. However, to ensure optimal results:

  • Avoid laying down, bending over, or exercising for the first 4 hours.
  • Refrain from hot environments like saunas or hot tubs for a few days.
  • Stay out of direct sunlight for 24 hours, and apply SPF 30+ if necessary.
  • Do not massage or rub the treated area to prevent spreading the product.
While minor swelling, bruising, or redness may occur, these effects subside within a few days.

Most adults are candidates for Botox, provided they are in good health and have realistic expectations. However, Botox may not be suitable for individuals who:

  • Have had allergic reactions to Botox or its ingredients.
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Have neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis.
  • Have active skin infections in the treatment area.
Dr. Trupiano will assess your medical history and aesthetic goals to determine your candidacy.

To minimize bruising:

  • Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, certain supplements) for at least 24-48 hours before treatment.
  • Apply a cold compress gently to the area post-treatment to reduce swelling.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a diet rich in vitamin K (found in leafy greens) to support healthy circulation.
  • Do not touch, massage, or apply pressure to the injection site.

Both Botox® and Dysport® are neuromodulators that reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. However:

  • Dysport® has a slightly faster onset (3-5 days) compared to Botox (7-14 days).
  • Dysport spreads more easily, making it ideal for larger treatment areas like the forehead, while Botox offers more precision for smaller zones.
  • Results for both last approximately 3-6 months.

Like Botox and Dysport, Xeomin® is a neuromodulator, but it is a “naked” toxin—meaning it does not contain accessory proteins. This difference:

  • May reduce the risk of resistance over time.
  • Works similarly to Botox, but some patients report a slightly slower onset.
  • Lasts about the same duration (3-6 months).

Botox is most commonly used to smooth dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial expressions. The most popular treatment areas include:

  • Forehead lines (“worry lines”)
  • Glabellar lines (“11s” between the eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet (outer corners of the eyes)
  • Bunny lines (wrinkles on the nose bridge)
  • Lip flip (enhancing upper lip definition)
  • Downturned mouth corners

Botox results typically last 3-6 months, depending on:

  • Your metabolism and muscle strength.
  • The number of units used and the treated area.
  • Your lifestyle (e.g., frequent exercise may break down Botox faster).
For consistent results, most patients schedule treatments every 3-4 months.

Yes. Dr. Trupiano specializes in natural-looking results, ensuring that Botox softens wrinkles without freezing your face. Proper dosing and precise placement allow for subtle, youthful movement while preventing deep expression lines.
